we’ve done some really unpredictable and really cool projects through this little junk business. but we’ve never done anything as life changing and profoundly humbling as operation: marcus luttrell’s office.
our mission: we were contacted by marcus luttrell’s wife to do a special undercover op for him. surprisingly, marcus, a new york times best selling author, had no office. no desk. no place to write. well let me rephrase that…he had a room that was meant to be his office but it was currently being used as storage for moving boxes and melanie’s gift wrapping room. andddd although i’m sure marcus appreciated any gifts wrapped in that room, we all decided that his office needed to accomplish it’s original purpose…
a place of peace for marcus. a place where he could focus and write. or read. or just be. we decided it should be a place that could be about the present and the future, a place that reflected ALL of the facets of marcus, not just marcus the Navy Seal. but also, marcus the dad. marcus the husband. marcus the son and brother and friend. marcus the DEVOUT Texan and dedicated American. marcus the writer, the reader, the poet, and the journal keeper. and although it would honor the past, it would not be solely focused on his past.
and i must tell y’all, we extensively prepared for this project. we studied. we pored through his books. his quotes. his movie. and when it came to the 4 days of actual filming, amie and i blubbered and cried through about 75% of the filming. and if you know his story. if you have read his books, watched the movie, and seen any of his interviews then you clearly, understand why. we just feel so honored to know him. we feel so deeply, deeply respectful for what he has been through. we are so moved by him and his story. and everything him and melanie do to this day to honor his fallen brothers.
which means we have never felt pressure like we did for this project. we wanted everything to be perfect. the desk. the decor. the books on the shelves. the rug. the chairs. rigby, his service dog’s bed. it all had to be soulful and special beyond words.
here we are hiding out at an undisclosed location on the way to marcus’ house on install day…killing a little time while melanie shuttled marcus out of the house…the whole JG team was feeling the jitters as undercover ninjas. and the extreme honor of working on such a special project.
and here mom, amie, & i are with marcus’ mom who played a big role in this entire undercover op.
fortunately, marcus didn’t go into Navy Seal ninja mode when we came in with a sneak attack of his office…but you’ll have to tune in tonight to see the finished office and his reaction! but i will say…as we all headed back to round top that night, the sun was setting on a very, very special day in all of our hearts. it’s not everyday you get to create a space for an American Hero. and it was a sublime experience to say the least.
one final thought…
this year marks the 10 year anniversary of Operation Redwing. 10 years since murph, axe, danny, kristensen, shane, james, senior, jeff, jacques, taylor, and mac lost their lives in the mountains of Afghanistan.
10 years since Marcus Luttrell was brought home as the lone survivor.
broken and battered but not defeated.
his relentless spirit and infinite dedication has kept alive the memory & the heroic service of so many soldiers.
we have had the profound honor of getting to know Marcus over the past year and we are, forever changed. forever indebted. we know this has been a hard month for all of the families & friends of operation redwing and we can’t even begin to understand their pain but we can say thank you. thank you today & everyday. for our freedom. for our independence. for our America. thank you, Marcus, for being the Lone Survivor. it is because of you that we all know about Operation Redwing. that we know more than just your brothers in battle perished. because without the lone survivor, operation redwing could have been just another news story. but instead, we know murph, danny boy, and axe. we know their families. their fiancées, their kids. their hearts. because of you, we are better Americans.
because you don’t have to be a service man or woman to be inspired by marcus’s story. his story will inspire you no matter who you are. no matter what your struggle.
his motto: NEVER QUIT, will get inside of you and live deep in your soul for the rest of your life.
we’re headed to the Patriot Tour this weekend and we couldn’t be more excited!
let us all thank a service man or woman in honor of the USA, in honor of operation redwing. respect. honor. never forget. #ORW10

there’s this picture. that we just can’t quit staring at…
because it feels very, very surreal.
yes, that’s billie joe armstrong of GREEN DAY standing by his JG airstream.
maybe it’s because the memory of listening to my dookie tape (you read that right…the cassette tape…in a tape deck) is so vivid…and sitting up late, late at night watching insomniac theater on VH1 just to catch their latest videos. it’s because there is something about GREEN DAY that makes them larger than life. because they are the kings of punk rock. the rock ‘n roll hall of famers that are not only one of the best selling bands of all time but they are also a testament to the american dream and to the fact that really, really, REALLY big dreams really can come true.
because i know you agree with me when i say that it is wildly RANDOM that we received a call one day from billie joe armstrong’s wife, adrienne armstrong. i mean who in the whole entire world could have ever predicted that? green day is calling US? us little ole junkers out here in texas? i remember the day amie called to tell me she had just hung up the phone with adrienne armstrong…i was at the roller skating rink…ummm, yes that’s right…i was at the roller skating rink. apparently adrienne was wanting a very special gift for billie joe for their 20th wedding anniversary….and we were just the ones for the job.
here it is in her words…
“Billie Joe & I met in my home town of Minneapolis, Minnesota on July 4, 1990. Four years later on July 2, 1994 we married in the backyard of our Berkeley, CA home. We have been on an epic adventure ever since – raising kids and animals, creating a home, working and traveling and experiencing the many ups, downs & in-betweens of life together as a family.
As our 20 year wedding anniversary was approaching, I knew I wanted to get him a vintage Airstream. We had talked about getting one over the years and how fun it would be to travel the coast, stopping at surf breaks along the way. I started looking online for interior ideas and Miranda Lambert’s and Dierks Bentley’s Airstreams kept coming up in image searches. So I tracked down The Junk Gypsies. I would have tried to do the project myself but I didn’t know the first thing about Airstreams. I was hoping they could fix it up and make it work for him. This has been such a fun experience working with them. They truly got what I wanted to do for Billie Joe. To create a surf shack on wheels. A cozy, laid back space to hang out & drink his morning coffee while listening to his favorite records. This cute baby is going to be with us for this next chapter in our family adventure. And I am so grateful to Amie & Jolie for making this happen.
here’s their sweetest-ever wedding picture from 20 years ago…
and here is billie joe and adrienne with their kids when GREEN DAY was inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame last month…
and here’s proof that amie and i are much better airstream renovators than we are rockstars…although there is some serious inner-rockstar wannabe action happening here…
i won’t mention the fact that while filming this, i think i threw out my neck (how do they do it??….maybe i’m not rockstar material….i’m also tone deaf).
but in all seriousness…we’ve spent about a year getting to know adrienne, and their love for each other is really so amazing and so authentic. we’re in love with their love story. it is the REAL DEAL. and, there is no doubt that adrienne is possibly one of the sweetest souls we’ve ever known…and that, together, they have conquered the world. and we are so incredibly thankful from the bottom of our texas hearts that we were able to be a part of this story…because it has added such a wonderful, inspiring, and sublimely beautiful piece to our junky puzzle of life.
we’ll be posting lots of pics soon so y’all stay tuned!!! and get ready for tonight!!! #TGIJF with us and green day!!! wooo-hoooo!!!

first of all…let me just get it out there…THANK YOU. come on let’s hug it out. for reals. thank y’all for your comments on my last post… from the bottom of my heart. i read each and every comment and every last one was like a biggo high five.
or a fist bump…with a ‘blow it up’ at the end.
or maybe a shake ‘n bake, baby!
of course there is a slight possibility i’m a little too dramatic and over-enthusiastic but that’s pretty much how i translated them. and to each and every one that commented on the blog, i’m high fiving, fist bumping (and blowing it up), and shakin’ n’ bakin’ back at ya!
sooooo to catch you up….there’s sooooo much to tell. where to start?
i’ll start with the question we get daily. Q: when are new episodes airing?
A: we just wrapped season 3 a few weeks ago.
we filmed for about 5 weeks in october/november and then picked back up in the glorious, temperate climate of january and filmed for about 5 more weeks. it really was glorious. sun-filled days, the warmth on our shoulders as we worked, and after the sun went down, it was really, really awesome. it was pretty much like we were on a beautiful tropical island. ok wait, that was in my self-inflicted 85% dark chocolate overdose dreams. it was freezing. and raining. every. dang. day. which just meant throw on your carharrt, pull on the work gloves, and get to work.
ain’t nobody got time for being cold.
we are really, really proud of this season. there are so many cool transformations and so many pretty amazing collaborations. we forged real bonds. we were inspired. we are forever changed and forever grateful.
consider this your junk gypsies season 3 trailer in words & iphone pics (come on y’all, work with me)…
we team up with our favorite partner-in-crime, miranda lambert, and pull off a super covert heist on her mom for a pretty amazing reveal.
we do an airstream for one of the biggest rock n’ rollers of all time (i still can’t tell ya who…buttttt it does involve a obligatorily necessary trip to the texas beach)…
we partner with one of our original inspirations in the junk world, rachel ashwell for a momentous event…
and….we are forever changed by working with marcus & melanie luttrell. marcus, the american hero, dad, husband, patriot, and all-around die-hard texan. (yes, THE LONE SURVIVOR…THE WAR HERO)…there is SO. MUCH. MORE. to tell.
we transform a 1900′s smokehouse into the coolest bunkhouse ever, give a 1960-something kitchen an entirely new look, give gypsy archie her dream closet and patio, do an epic garage sale for charity, dance the night away in an historic texas dance hall and moreeeeee!!!
and yes, we cried in EVERY single one. as much as i try, i just CANNOT keep it together.
no offiicial air dates yet…but most likely early june. the entire season will air on great american country, and about half of the season will cross over on HGTV! because what’s better than 1 network? 2 networks!
shake n’ bake, y’all! i can’t wait to hear what you think of season 3!!!

there once was a guy named jason…who fell madly, deeply, and fiercely in love with a girl named lynsey.
and these two…well they decided they wanted to be farmers. and so they did.
they wanted life to get back to the basics with their 4 little girls. they wanted people to KNOW their farmers. to KNOW where their food was coming from…
YonDER WAY FARM is an organic meat farm here in fayette county….where the only thing better than their homegrown organic goodness is the authenticity of their hearts and their lives. they believe in honesty. in hard work. in dirt under your fingernails. in getting up at sunrise with the chickens and then making sure all the animals are tucked in safely at sunset.
and most importantly, they believed in good things and in being good people.
i absolutely CANNOT wait for y’all to meet the kramers of YONDER WAY FARM on this week’s episode of junk gypsies. because we know that y’all are going to love them just as much as we do.
jason, also known as @yonderwayfarmer, and lynsey, aka @fivechicksandafarmer, as they are known to their legions of instagram followers. (if you don’t follow them on instagram, let me tell ya…you are missing out!). and of course their 4 little chicks…kk, laney rae, ruthie, and exie jo….all make up yonder way farm.
this farm is their dream. their passion.
this is the good stuff, y’all. we are proud to call them friends and country neighbors. this week, you can watch as we visit YonDER WAy FARM, dig around in the barns for all kinds o’ lost junk, and give them the farm store they so deserve!
and oh yes, we did….because who could resist? american gothic…yonder way farm style.
we’re so excited for y’all to meet the kramers and to see the transformation of their country store this week! tune in this thursday, AugUST 7…9/8C on GreaT AMERICan COUNTRY!
watch the sneak peek here!!!
and go catch up with the fam on facebook and instagram for all kinds o’ homegrown happiness!
yes He did. GoD made a farmer. and GoD bless those farmers.
and from jason’s favorite song…let’s all take a moment to really…i mean REALLY absorb these lyrics…
“take your time… don’t live too fast,
troubles will come and they will pass.
go find a woman and you’ll find love,
and don’t forget son,
there is Someone up above.”
-simple man, lynyrd skynyrd
and finally…thanks to april pizana, lynsey’s instagram & matt blair for these pics!!!
(after reading this blog, be sure you hop on over to april’s blog for even more pics of YonDER WAY FARM)
