junkcation (2014 edition) – D E S T I N.

July 24, 2014

it’s been a few years since we took a real family vacation griswald-style. so we decided it was high time we loaded up and trekked halfway across the country. along the highways and backroads. through the swamps of louisiana and over the rivers of mississippi.

this was the summer of the JUNKCATION.

we all piled in amongst the myriad of suitcases, flip-flops, auto bingo, sunscreen (have i mentioned we are a FAIR-SKINNED family?), & road maps…wheels down. eastbound. east to destin, florida. where the sand is white, the sun is bright, and the water is amazingly crystal clear.

our good friends over at destin getaways hooked us up with some beachfront digs that made us feel like royalty and of course, NORMAL people would probably have made it to destin in the approximately 10 hours it SHOULD take to get there, but for our griswald style family, it took us a SOLID 2 days.

let’s start at the beginning of our journey…

we fell in love all over again with louisiana (actually we did louisiana adventures on the way TO destin and on the way HOME …more about the trip home in the next blog)…

home of fairy tale-esque cypress trees, creole food, and abita strawberry beer.

back on the road again, we left no welcome center unturned. and never passed up a photo op at every state sign…and then, finally…

hellloooooo florida!

andddddd….by the time we arrived at our beach house haven 2 days later there was no sun left in the sunshine state….just the light of the moon. which was actually pretty dang perfect.

it was magical as it reflected off of the ocean…(and ummmm…yeah. sorry just an iphone pic here…i was roadweary.)

we woke up to this view from the steps of our porch…helloooo powdery sand beaches, clear waters, and waves crashing into shore…helloooo beautiful beach umbrellas and turquoise waters. hellloooo salty life.

let the beach junkcation begin!!!!

we hit the beach like gnarly surfers ready to catch a wave. like duuuudeeeeee…. like we were rad.

ok, so maybe we aren’t surfers or even very good boogie boarders for the most part…but we can build a DANG fine sandcastle (hello drip sandcastles) and THIS view was just steps from our beach house extraordinaire….

so we did a whole lot of this…

seriously y’all…JUST STEPS off of our PORCH…

the essential JG infuser…water with watermelon & lime…

and JG ‘keep the stars in your eyes’ sweatshirt bag…

and then on day 2…sunburned and coated in aloe vera, we decided to venture past the paradise of our beach house…and to do what fair skinned people do at the beach.

they eat at pompano joes

annnddddd then they go bowling at uncle buck’s FISHBOWL

and then, we hit the beach again at dusk just in time to catch more waves and the gorgeous sunsets…

of course…when in destin…this HAD to happen.

because well, because we’re totally hip like that. helloooooo 1992!!!! airbrush in tha houseeeee!!!! we’re bringin’ in BACKKKKK!!!!!

from this porch we watched waves crashing, the sun rising and setting, dolphins jumping in the surf, baby sea turtles getting ready to hatch, a wedding proposal, and 2 weddings.

and on the last day, destin getaways hooked us up (yet again)…with some fam beach shots by the amazing romona robbins

yes, dad and t-smitty wore their cowboy hats (and in dad’s case, boots and jeans) on the beach. you can take the boy outta the country….

and with jen and john of destin getaways…

to whom we owe this awesome jUNKCATION! and lee…you are the apple of my eye! 😉

so with salt on our lips and sand in our souls, we bid farewell to our little haven on the beach…we ate our weight in seafood and soaked up all that florida sun… but alas, it was time to head west…west to texas. but not before another stop in louisiana…but that my land-locked friends, is another blog.

in the meantime, check out our JUNKCaTion pinboard for some salty inspiration!

everybody say amen and pass the pina colada!!

  • Reply Amy July 24, 2014 at 2:34 pm

The feeling I get when I am on the beach, is one that gives me a whole sense of myself. It is an embrace unlike any other. The toes meeting the sand and digging in , the beach opening it’s arms to take me in, to give me peace. The sound of the waves transport me to another place and time. The shells that I find are treasures that I truly feel were put there just for me to find. The seagulls are a sign that you have arrived and you must breathe it all in. I always think…..sigh.. how I would rather be on the beach than do laundry….take me away!

I loved that man more than anything and remembered walking out to the beach that night and looking up at the beautiful sky full of the brightest stars and talking to him and God. I always feel him, but nothing like I do at the beach. He is a US Navy WWII veteran so I think that is very fitting.

  • Reply Ricki Ryan July 24, 2014 at 2:52 pm

I’ve never been to Destin, but many friends extol it’s virtues. What I love about the beach is that life slows down, much like it does in the country…..nothing but the caw of seagulls, the sound of the undulating waves, the giggles of children splashing in the water. Ice cold beer, sweet tea and pounds of shrimp and oysters, just to name a few. I love the Texas coast, though it’s much maligned for not being crystal clear, but it would be nice to look across the Gulf from the opposite side, looking TOWARD our beloved state!

Well, if you think a beach is a beach that’s not really true. Destin beaches are one of a kind. What you get with all that sugary sand, salty air and relaxation are a lifetime of memories to take home (along with all that extra sand in your shoes). There’s also good ‘junkin’ in Destin. Although, I can make a good junkin’ trip out of any vacation 🙂 Gotta run set my DVR for the JG marathon!! Destin Rocks!!

The sand. I love the sand. It is so multifunctional !! It functions as a pedicure, rubbing away dead skin on your feet. It warms and relaxes you as you walk or lay on it. Who needs a sleep number bed when sand is available; it conforms to you as you lay on it. It provides for hours of fun building sand castles. Best of all it provides memories… when you come home and are unpacking and find small grains in your suitcase; you smile and think back to the beach.

I need some sand in my life !!

The last journey I went on was a road trip with my mom and best friend to come down and experience the wonderment of all that Junk Gypsy is. We road tripped from Chicago to Round Top for the Spring ’13 junk gypsy prom, to shop until our hearts were content, and of course to meet you. You didn’t disappoint. It was a magical week in my life. Now my mom and I are on a different journey. We found out my dad has a stage IV brain tumor recently. We spend our days helping him fight the fight, and take breaks to watch you on GAC (it gives us something to be excited about, and a sense of normal). I really want to be able to go on a vacation with my parents while my dad is still feeling “ok”…as “ok” as he will ever be again. Your pictures are….well, picturesque and I can see us on that beach. It would mean the world to win this trip.

With my soon to be hubby by my side, my beautiful daughter in sight, sand in my toes and a tasty cocktail in hand, I leave all of my worries back home in Missouri and just focus on all of my blessings and happiness. I have time to concentrate on where my path is taking me (without doubt a path less traveled – I’m a free spirit), and also time to focus on nothing but one of nature’s most beautiful songs… the waves. So what is my favorite part of the beach? Well, everything.

My favorite part of a beach vacation is the laid back atmosphere, being able to wear your swimsuit all day and not worrying about makeup. Watching the amazing wild dolphins jumping through the waves and most importantly being with my favorite people in the whole wide world. Being from Dallas and East Texas I find all of that on the Emerald Coast and am thankful that it’s not too long of a trip to get there, about 12 hours. I even love being cooped up in the car with my hubby and kids! Life is grand especially if you get the opportunity to escape every once in a while. Much love to your family, hope to get to visit one day soon!

We haven’t had a real vacation in over ten years. It would be totally awesome to take a “junkcation”. My favorite thing would be relaxing with my loved ones, soaking up the magnificent wonders God has so beautifully made. Being at the beach just makes you all the more thankful for everything He has created and the life you’ve been given, no matter how hectic or stressful it can be. It would be a blessing to be able to spend some time there.

I have always loved the beach since I was a kid and seeing my own kids enjoy playing in the water really takes me back to that time of when I didn’t have a care in the world and all I had to do was play. Life is short and you need to take the time to have a junkcation once in your life. like Jimmy Buffett says it’s Five O” Clock some where and its time to put you butt in a chair and feet in the sand.

Whether we are there to surf, sail, dig, drink, or just to contemplate life, at the deepest leel we are all there to connect with the ocean, the sound of the water…nature. It fills our soul. She stayed with her Gma a lot during her early years . Gma lived in Pt O ‘ Conner Texas . My DW was as free as a bird there. Walked to the beach barefoot every day (5 years old) stopping to talk to friends and gather shells. Yes I said 5 years old. A much safer and simpler time. I take her to POC as often as I can , just to see the smile on her face .,She tells me the closer we get the better she can smell that salt water and little by little she thinks back to the time of her life. Good memories.

The beach is my peace within my soul, the calm in my storm and my place to dream. To dream about my future, to reflect on my past and to be grateful for EXACTLY where God has me right now. Even though I am also a fair skinned gal, I just slap on the sunscreen, put on my floppy hat and dig my toes in that sand like I am diggin’ for gold! If someone says beach…..IM THERE! But let me just say….Galveston ain’t gonna cut it for this ole girl….If I cant see the bottom of the muddy waters, this sister will make my sand castle on the shore and just be amazed at the greatness of that vast sea of water, not even THINKING ’bout what might be lurkin’ in there. Now YOUR vacay at Destin Getaways is this girl’s idea of heaven on earth! Bring it on….ready to get my toes in the water and (butt) in the sand, not a worry in the world, a cold beer in my hand and…..life will be good that day…..life is good that day!

I grew up a hop, skip, and a jump away from Destin in Panama City. Only after I left did I truly understand the value of what I experienced. There’s something about standing on the water’s edge and taking deep breaths in of that sea and salt! Growing up, a day at the beach was an event and always felt like a mini vacay. Would love the chance to take Mama on a mini vacay to say thanks for all the ‘trips’ she gave to me!

I simply think the best thing about a beach vacation is the sheer majesty of the Good Lord creating the SUN, the MOON, The STARS, the Ocean, the SAND, the TREES and the fish…and putting all together for a little piece of paradise on earth…HOW did he do all that and then some just 7 days….I feel so little and lost in all that GREATNESS…blessed beyond what I deserve just sitting, soaking up the waves, the rays, the clouds and sights and the smells….truly loosing yourself in the BEAUTY of it all…even just for a day or 2…MY cup runneth over at the BEACH…( I remain land-locked in RURAL Kansas ) ( so a trip to the beach is EXTRA super duper special ) ( crossing my fingers and tootsies)

  • Reply Ky Parker July 24, 2014 at 8:26 pm

The best beach bacau is Destin with the white sand beaches that look like mounds of sugar at sunset , crossing the bridge between fort Walton beach and destiny to see all the various shade of blues and greens in the waters. Going to Panama City beach to a little drive in dive for a Cuban sandwich. To sit on the beach at sunset when it’s quiet and all u hear is the crashing waves – it’s amazing to see gods handiwork and as u watch and listen, ALL stress and the world around u disappears. A beach bacau in destin is heavenly!!!

My favorite thing about the beach is the way it assaults your senses: the feel of the sand, the breeze, and the water; the smell of the salt in the air; the taste of salt on your lips; the sound of the waves crashing and the gulls calling; and the sight of the blues of the water and sky, and wildlife, and children. The ocean stirs my soul and reminds me of the awesomeness of God’s creation.

A beach vacation- with its peaceful vibe, tranquility, and beautiful views is the perfect place to spend QUALITY time with family! Relax, unwind, and UNPLUG the devices. I live in Western Washington, and while the Pacific Northwest has beautiful shorelines, We do NOT have what Destin has… Hot sun, white sand, and clear blue water! THAT is what I love most about a beach vacation! While I do have a special place in my heart for our rocky beaches and blustery storms, it is just not a real BEACH to this misplaced Gulf Coast native. I long for the kind of beach that Destin has. My Husband & I have been married for 3 years – without a honeymoon. He has never been to the Gulf Coast and doesn’t understand how FABULOUS it is! Have you ever been to a place that is so beautiful it brings tears to your eyes? That’s how I feel when I think about Destin. It truly is Heaven on Earth and the only place this extremely busy working / volunteering wife and mother from a small town in Indiana can press pause on our chaotically busy life (that I wouldn’t trade for anything) and just soak in how beautifully amazing life really is. There’s nothing more soothing than sitting in the soft powdery sand watching those sparkling emerald waves crash into the shore. It makes me forget about deadlines, permission slips, office meetings, doctors appointments, etc. if only for a brief time. I love my home in Indiana, but Destin is and always will be my “happy place”.

The best part about a beach vacation…. Is it the total relaxation, the step back away from everything in order to reflect, or having my family together to focus on just us? That’s it for sure. We love our beach trips!

We would search the beach for its beautiful shells and living creatures taking turns running along the beach and taking in big gulps of the salty fresh air! Then at dusk take our junk gypsy blanket lay it on the beach and gaze up at the stars and moon! A girl needs to Dream!

Our most favored restaurant is LuLu’s. Which is Jimmy Buffett’s sisters restaurant. I have been going down to Orange Beach since I was a baby, I will be 21 in Octber and I still love it. I had the wonderful privilege to be able to go with my family 4 years ago (this coming Dec) to Destin after my niece was born. She was only 6 weeks old and we drove allllll the way from Northern Indiana with a screaming colicky baby!!! EEEK! We stayed literally down the road from Pompano Joes and they had the best food!!! Unfortuanetely b/c it was Dec it was FREEZING cold so we were never able to get in the water or in the pool. Basically just look at the beautiful ocean. My absolute favorite thing to do on the beach is to get up at the crack of dawn (which is normally pretty difficult for me b/c I am not a morning person except on vacation) and watch the beautiful sunrise and then spend the day bathing in the sun with my 50spf on of course b/c I am so fair. 🙂 My husband is a farmer and hauls feed and grain with his semi for our local feed mill. And at the time when we went he wasn’t able to go with my family b/c he was just starting out with his business. So I would LOVE it if we could go on this mini Junkation so my husband can experience it with me this time. We haven’t been on a beach vacation TOGETHER in over 4 years!! :)))

Then at night, sitting on the porch after the boys have gone to bed, having a cocktail with hubs and playing card games while listening to the sounds of the ocean. <3

The only decisions to make are what to eat and when to tan the other side! Picking up seashells and watching the pelicans and seagulls. The taste of salt on your lips and the sting of a sunburn. We love Destin!! Our favorite things about going to the beach is the long walks down the shore, eating at the open air restaurants, listening to the waves on the porch and spending quality time together as a family!

My husband & I have never been to Destin and we’ve been married a little over a year now , and I would love to renew our vows on the beach , yes I know it’s only been a year. But last year American Airline list my luggage , it went to Kingston Jamaica , and we went to Lake Tahoe . My wedding dress and all my clothes finally reached me 7 days later on the day we were flying home . Anyway , we got married in matching t-shirts. I would love to have a Junk Gypsie style wedding on the beach .
    🙂

I don’t think I can pick just one favorite thing about a beach vacay! I love the sand, sun, and salt water. I especially love that there is no timeline at the beach. I love listening to the waves crashing. It’s a beautiful reminder that this world is a very BIG place and I’m just a little tiny part of it. 🙂

My husband and I have been married for 10 years and never been able to take a real vacation. I almost lost him last year when he had open heart surgery and then had complications and then had to have a defibulator put in. My favorite part of this vacation would be time spent relaxing in the sun and water with my husband. Just some worry free time together would be a Godsend!

My favorite part about vacation is the beach itself! Just like how the Junk Gypsies have a calling for junk, I have a calling for the beach! I live in the mountains now but my heart always yearns for the smell of salt water and sand in my toes. It doesn’t get much better than spending a couple of days sitting on the beach in a thrift store fold up chair worry free and just relaxing with the people you love the most.

  • Reply Shana S July 25, 2014 at 7:55 pm

The smell of the salt water when it first hits your senses let’s the calm begin coursing through your veins. Millions are the tiny grains of warm sand exfoliating away the stress & cares, allowing your body to soak in all the beauty of creation. Beautiful sunrises & breathtaking sunsets being the inspiration of the mind & flooding new memories in, with family & friends, that are never to be forgotten or regretted. From my first beach trip as a child & with each beach trip I make, this is what I love & Destin has made its imprint on my gypsy soul more than once & hopefully many more!

When I think about the beach I remember visiting it as a little girl for the first time. The whole family (including our pets) loaded up in a camper & drove to Panama City Beach. My dad tied our black lab’s leash to a lawn chair & we looked up later & he was gone. At the end of the day he ran up dragging it behind him! I also remember collecting sand dollars as they washed ashore. I haven’t seen one in years.

Being from Iowa, I am still waiting to take a beach vacation with my kids and husband before my oldest graduates in 2015! Hoping to make that happen! We tried a little beach getaway a few years ago when we visited friends in San Antonio over Christmas vacation. We drove to Port Aransas for an overnight stay on the beach. Unfortunately it was very foggy and cold. 🙁 The kids thought that short moment was great playing in the sand, picking up sea shells and of course “trying” not to get wet! 😉

I love everything about a beach vacay, BUT my favorite thing is kind of a pastime/fun activity I’ve done since I was a little kid.. Fishing in the shallow water with a cheap, hand-held fishing net. Trying to catch those fast little schools of fish is a thrill, a challenge, a WORKOUT, and just a fun thing I always did with my dad growing up! I probably look ridiculous to outsiders as a 25 year old girl running around in the water with my net like a chicken with my head cut off, but I don’t mind and I don’t think there will ever be a beach trip I take that I won’t pack my net! 😉

Beach vacations are the best! They allow you to relax in the salty air while listening to the soothing waves. We are lucky because the beach in Texas is just minutes away from our home. However this getaway would be even more meaningful. This year my daughter will be going to college 14 hrs away from our home near Corpus Christi to attend The Univ of Alabama. She will be on the track team so not a lot of time to come home. Staying at Destin would allow her to visit us on the beach. It will be just like home ❤️

Doesn’t matter how many destinations we’ve traveled to and the miles we’ve covered… the road trips, explorations, adventures. There’s only one place that’s always set apart from the rest. Vacation = beach. There’s something about parking yourself in the sand and surf for a few days with your kids building sand castles, searching for seashells, riding waves, tossing a football and then just sitting still, soaking up the sun. It’s on a different level. There’s no hustle, no bustle, no agenda. Time stands still. Traveling to new destinations are our adventures. Traveling to the beach is our vacation.
